VAREL Lowboard

VAREL Lowboard
Unique piece, Compagnons de Vie collection (2018)

Only low tide could clear the footpath from the small lighthouse island, surrounded by the North Sea, across to the village. The other way lead through the dreaded raised bog, over unsteady oak boards blackened by the brackish water and severe surging storms. This wave-washed wooden jetty picked to pieces by the sea innumerable times. Repaired just as often by carpenters' hands, rescued, and eventually, abandoned. An oak plank forms the body of VAREL.

VAREL appears magically, overwhelms the senses, inspires fantasies. The structure is extraordinary. Seamlessly worked from an oak plank over a hundred years old and four meters long. Its surface, emotional. To the touch, original, wrought iron nails. The colors of the moor; their incomprehensible depth. Signs of wear, written by time onto glorious wood, like an ancient diary. Steel pyramids, once crude post caps give rhythm to the solid oak drawer. Revealing, concealing. Silently, lightly floating; its innermost being at the touch of a finger.
